Should you start a blog, podcast, or Youtube Channel in 2020?

If you’re wondering “Should I start a blog (or podcast or YouTube channel) in 2020” then keep reading!

Today I’m going to break down whether or not you should start a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel in 2020!

First and foremost, it’s important to know a couple of things:

1. Content is King.

In 2019 and 2020 it’s important that you are creating consistent content that resonates and attracts your ideal audience.

The content you create is how new people will find you and how your current audience will continue to be engage with your brand and support you!

Creating QUALITY content is the most important thing to think about when deciding if you want to start a blog, podcast, or Youtube Channel.

2. Understand what your audience wants.

It’s important to be clear on who is in your audience and how they PREFER to consume content. This will give you an indication on whether you should start a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel.

3. What is YOUR preferred method of communication?

Do you prefer to write? Create a blog.

Do you like to talk? Create a podcast.

Are you comfortable on camera? Create a Youtube channel.

Now lets dive a little deeper on each of these platforms and if you should create a blog, podcast, or Youtube channel in 2020.

Should you create a blog in 2020?

Blogging is NOT dead!

Blogs are great for the SEO (search engine optimization) of your website and they are directly connected to Google.

Google is the largest search engine available and if you create SEO friendly blog posts then you can INCREASE your chances of being discovered by new people online.

For my WordPress users, download the plugin “Yoast SEO.”

This is the BEST WordPress plugin to help you create Google-able (totally not a word) blog posts that anyone can search for on the internet!

If you love to write or you’re good at written content, a blog is the way to go! I have found writing to be very therapeutic and honestly, I outline every piece of content I create so it’s super easy for me to flesh out these outlines into full blog posts.

In addition to this, I love that with blogging, my content lasts longer.

What I mean is that, social media posts are relevant for a max of 48 hours; however, blog posts remain relevant for much longer because depending on the topic people will continue to search for this content over a longer period of time.

Should you start a podcast in 2020?

If you like to talk and feel most comfortable SPEAKING to your audience, then a podcast is the way to go.

Podcasting has become really popular because people can listen and do other things (like cook, clean, drive, etc).

Podcasts are a great way to deliver information and value to your audience in a way that they can consume it without taking them away from something else.

Also, if your social media channels crash, you still have your podcast content to fall back on.

I highly recommend streaming to multiple services (iTunes, Google Play, SoundCloud, etc) and also sharing your episodes on your website.

Should you start a Youtube Channel in 2020?

Youtube is such a popular platform and a great platform to build an audience and community on.

Youtube is powered by Google, so content you create on Youtube can be searched on Google if you are optimizing your video titles, descriptions, and tags.

The downside to Youtube is that just like the other social media channels, you really don’t own your space. Youtube at any moment can demonetize, delete, or malfunction and then your content could be lost forever.

Despite this, video is HANDS DOWN the most engaging content you can create!

Audiences in 2020 LOVE video content, so if you have a shining personality and feel confident in front of the camera then definitely hop on Youtube.

Making weekly Youtube videos and creating a community on that platform is a great way to grow and build an audience.

Make sure you drive your subscribers to your website or another platform you own (podcast, email list, etc). If anything happens to your channel, you still have a way to communicate with your audience.

Something else to consider:

How much time do you have to dedicate to creating content?

Video content will most likely take you longer to create than a blog post or podcast.

I recommend testing to see how long it takes you to create each type of content (blog post, podcast, video). Use this as a guide to figure out if you can invest the time needed to consistently create.

Not sure where to start?

Try each type of content.

Spend one month dedicated to producing content on each platform. Whichever one you feel most confident and comfortable with being consistent on, continue to do that.

Here’s a sample schedule of what you can try:

Month 1: Publish a blog post each week

Month 2: Produce a podcast episode each week

Month 3: Upload a Youtube (or IGTV) video each week

Make sure you spend some time ENGAGING on each platform. Also do a little research on how people use the platforms, so you can maximize how you show up and add content in these spaces.

Remember, when you’re first starting out, your content will not be perfect.

Don’t worry about that.

As you continue to create content consistently, your content will improve.

For now, focus on consistently showing up and producing content your audience is actually interested in.

It’s not too late to hop in and start creating blog content, or start a podcast or Youtube Channel. Sit down today and brainstorm some content ideas and get to creating! Your audience is waiting for you!
