Building your business outside of social media

Hey, boo, hey! A few weeks ago social media was down for the day and it sent everyone into a panic. I’m sure you got the emails about how much money you were losing and how you should be building your email list. (Chances are, you didn’t lose money if you are a service provider). Today I wanted to chat with you about how to build your business outside of social media.

Social media is a great tool…

But it’s just that, just a resource, just a tool. There are other ways to build your business and it’s ok to get clients from social media and it’s great if it is your main way to network but don’t let it be your only way. 

Building your email list

When you are offering a “freebie” to build your email list, give your content a content upgrade. Be sure that you are providing high quality content so that you are attracting high quality clients.

Be authentic when engaging with your community. Try to be consistent with your emails but don’t fatigue your audience. You know your audience best. 

With email lists, you want people to see the value of who you are outside of social media. Build your community with intention. 

Ask your audience to reply to the emails. It’s a great way to get the conversation started with your community.

One more thing to think about is email platforms could crash too. Save your email list. On the last day or first day of every month, export your email list.

Text lists

Texting is one of the easiest ways to grow a list because people are opting in just to get text messages from you. It’s an easy way to build your list and grow your community.


Blogging is something that is going to be long game. It is very viable and a great way to build your business beyond social media. On social media, you have to post so often but with blogs, you can post maybe once or twice a month and you have SEO working for you!

In-person networking

Don’t forget about in-person networking. This is a great way to build relationships and network with people to build your community. You could even host your own event!


Focus on your current customer and client experience so that they will refer you.

Sell regularly on whichever platform you choose..

We have to sell more. That’s one thing I see as a problem across the board, whether it’s social media or email or whatever, people are not selling. If you’re not selling, you’re not getting clients, right? You have to let people know that something is available for sale! 

Don’t stress…

A lot of people stressed about what happened a few weeks ago on social media. I hope you weren’t stressed and realized that a day off of Instagram is not going to make or break your business. You are going to continue to grow because you’re good at what you do. You will learn how to implement diverse and interesting strategies and add those things to your business so that if a platform goes down, you have a backup plan.
