Today we are talking about 7 things no one tells you about starting a business. I’m sharing this in hopes that you are a bit more prepared or so that you can not feel so alone on this journey. It can be tough when you think you’re the only one having certain feelings about your business and that’s why I’m having this conversation.
There’s only so much you can learn from free stuff, but be careful to not OVER invest
Free content will only get you so far. At some point you HAVE to invest in your business. Whether it’s investing in tools, coaching, courses, or people.
But also, you don’t need to take 5 different programs or courses to teach you the SAME skill. Be mindful when you make investments and really ask yourself why am I investing in this program – what is the result or thing I’m looking to learn and have I learned it somewhere else but not implemented it?
At a certain point you have to learn and trust that you know what you’re doing and you know what to do. Yes, continue to learn but be INTENTIONAL with your investments. Your wallet and mindset will thank me later lol
Consistency is what truly wins
You don’t have to be the best, you have to be the one that continues to show up day in and day out. The people that are winning right now are the ones that were consistently putting in the work a year ago.
Tracking and time blocking is a business hack
Keeping track of how you’re using your time will keep you from wasting a lot of time. I use Toggl to track my time and the time of people on my team.
Time blocking helps me know when my work hours are and bulk work on tasks during my work times. Currently, I’m working nights and naps. I usually have a time block during nap time which is about 1.5 hours and then I try to work another 1-1.5 hours as soon as King falls asleep.
It’s harder and easier than you think
The hard part is staying disciplined and consistent.
But the ease happens once you figure out your system and process so you can literally rinse and repeat or get help that can execute for you. You just gotta listen to the episode to hear the details on this one!
It takes a while to see the money
Lord I wish I knew before I started this that I wasn’t going to see every dollar that went into my bank account. It would’ve saved me a lot of financial stress!
It feels like as soon as you sign a contract or get a payment someone has their hand out to grab it whether it’s a bill, coach, investment, or something else.
It took a while before I actually had money saved from my business or could look at my account and see that I was actually making money.
So often we glamorize these five figure launches but a lot of times people don’t actually see the money because you’re paying so much in overhead, team, ads, or your bills. Stay the course because eventually that savings and bank account starts looking right.
No one truly has a “secret” for success
It sounds nice but it aint the truth. There are no secrets, it’s all hard work, consistency, and proper planning. Having a strategy is key but EXECUTING the strategy consistently is what makes the difference.
There is no way to make money without doing the work
Passive products still require work – my biz bestie Breonna Queen is a course creator expert and she helps people diversify their income through digital products and one thing she says all the time is that
Passive income still requires active work.
Breonna Queen
She says while yes you can make money in your sleep, you still have to do active work while you’re awakeh.
We can’t allow ourselves to be tricked by the shiny idea of passive income being a way for us to never work but still make money, it doesn’t actually work like that.
Every level is hard
Whether you’re just starting out, growing, scaling… every level has its own set of challenges.
You never truly “arrive” but your perspective changes and you grow and are equipped with skills and support to help you navigate it.
So, there you go! Those are the 7 things no one tells you about starting a business and just my personal thoughts on what I wish I knew. The podcast episode really goes into more detail so give it a listen!
