Let’s just cut to the chase: here are 3 things you need to scale your business.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it is 3 immediate things you should focus on, simplify, and streamline when you are scaling your business.

Read on to find out what they are!

First, what is “scaling”?

Scaling basically means you are experiencing rapid growth in your business, but more importantly.

It’s when your revenue increases without a substantial increase in resources (like your own time).

If you’re experiencing rapid growth, but you’re working double the amount of hours you haven’t fully shifted into scaling as a business. You’re just working more.

A better way to explain this is if you’re working a job and you work overtime, just because you made more money you wouldn’t ever say you were scaling your business. It’s just trading more time (resources) for dollars. BUT if you’re working a job and then you use a new system to shave off 3 hours of work and get a pay raise, then this would be scaling because you’re making more income without increasing the amount of work you do.

Ok, so now I hope you understand what scaling is because I see people use this term wrong all the time.

Now let’s talk about the 3 things you need to scale your business. You need systems, processes, and people.

1. Systems

These are the automations, tools, and tech you use to run your business. Things like your email marketing system, funnel system, team management tool, CRM tool, etc.

When you’re scaling you want to use the best systems for your style of business. As a service provider the systems you use may be different from the systems a coach or consultant would use.

A good example of this is with email marketing systems. As a coach and consultant I always recommend Convertkit because of all the features it allows such as tagging and being able to see a ton of data.

However, many service providers that do visual work – such as photographers, graphic designers, web designers, etc – I often recommend Flodesk because it’s easy to use, but it’s pretty, which is on brand for these types of businesses.

The systems you use should support the function and actions you need them to take.

2. Processes

This is the “how” of running your business.

How do you do different things? What is your lead generation process? Marketing process? Onboarding/Offboarding process?

These are areas that remain consistent for not only the client experience, but for the rapid growth of the company.

Having solid processes makes it so that when you add team members they can duplicate what works for the business. When you think about processes, start out first documenting everything. Document how you provide a specific service so it will be easier to hand it off to a team member in the future.

If you’re a VA start out documenting your process for how you conduct your monthly client calls and turn this into a process because if you hire an associate on your team, then they can learn how client calls are conducted by the company and execute it. Now you’re scaling because you’re able to grow faster without using up your limited time.

Processes is an area many business owners skip out on because you’re so used to doing everything yourself. Even as a coach you should document things like how you answer certain questions, what is your method for how you coach on specific things, etc. so that this way at some point you could hire a co-coach and scale if you want.

Processes are a super important part growing and scaling a business

3. People

You don’t need a ton of people to scale.

I have one person on my team currently, and at my max I had 4 people on my team. No matter how many I’ve had I have scaled with both. It’s not about having more people, it is about having the right people in place to execute your processes and oversee your systems.

Hiring the wrong person or hiring because you’re desperate for a break or burnt out isn’t going to help you scale. It can actually have the opposite effect.

This is why I recommend starting with the other two first because you can honestly scale with only one person on your team, but it’s impossible to scale without systems and processes. You’ll always be working and that’s not effective.

People are the lifeblood of your business and you have to get good at delegating and being a leader.

So, if you need to work on these 3 things…
